Trying to balance a pump from the display tank with a pump from the sump a two pump system regardless of safety valves, cut off switches etc is inviting disaster :nono: Either the Sump must be fed by gravity when the sump is located below the DT or the DT must be fed by gravity when the Sump is above the DT Now depending on your specific design criteria and space available there are a number of possibilities when designing an overflow whether this is a DIY project or a a custom build by a LFS The list below is not an exhaustive list by any means and I encourage other members to add as they see fit A drilled tank is infinately more superior to a non drilled tank, a non drilled tank relies on a syphon system.

May I correct?While it has worked reliably in my experience, I make no claims or promises about its reliability or robustness in general. Please make sure you have a back-up mechanism in place in case the overflow is clogged or the siphon is broken. Use this design at your own risk. It's taken a while because of two things: 1 I've been working on some 3D renderings of the device itself, and 2 procrastination. I decided I'm going to show the design in three parts. First is the overflow itself, second will be the return, and third will be the return and overflow combined. Here are the rendered images of the overflow:. Just cut off the kinked ends of the cable ties, wrap a cable tie around the water inlet, and superglue them together per the picture above. The idea of hooking up the venturi on the return pump to the overflow to prime and maintain the siphon is just like how the MAME works.
I was never able to make an effective venturi on the return PVC segment like the original MAME design so I went back to the standard design using a check valve. But I might try hooking it up to a return pump with a venturi fitting, since you had success with it. I haven't had any issues with gurgling noises, though it's been on my tank for about a month now.
I think having a cap with a small hole drilled on top, putting a valve on the return pump, and using clear flexible tubing helps to prevent any gurgling noises. This is very simple so I don't think I need to separate the individual parts, but let me know if you need me to do so.

The best way to collect rain water is with a cistern that can hold thousands of gallons of water, rather than a mere 55 gallons. I recognize that not many people would like to spend their time and money on a large plastic container in their yard, which is why I am posting this "how to" as a compromise. I also think that having a rain barrel forces you to reconsider your daily water use, which is a positive outcome of a large or small rain water collecter. Other rain barrels use glue to hold the hose bib spigot in place, or they only tap the threads of the hose bib into the plastic wall of the barrel, which will certainly wear out and leak. I am using a pre-existing hole in the barrel to access the rear of the hose bib to tighten it on securely.
My system does not have leaks, and if they ever develop, you could always tighten the connections or replace them. With this design I have never had a customer come back to me saying that their barrel started to leak.
Another advantage to my design is that it is easily repairable if a part ever wears out or leaks. Many other rain barrels also drill holes in the barrel plugs themselves to attach a hose bib, which will come out of the bottom of the barrel.
This is not a great plan either as the plug cannot be retightened and the joint is susceptible to breaking if the barrel is accidentally dropped on the hose bib. Many rain barrels are made by cutting large holes in the top so that someone can access the back of the hose bib to put on a nut.
The holes are commonly covered with screening material which filter's debris. In concept, this idea works, but in reality the screens clog, or rip, or they let in mosquitos, or they let in sunlight which encourages algae growth and bad smells.
My barrels do not let in sun or mosquitos because it is a closed system. Debris may settle in the bottom of the barrel over time, but this will happen with any barrel. The barrel can be easily cleaned by tipping it over and spraying it out with a hose. Follow my instructions and I think you will be happy with the product. This is the most common type of barrel that I have seen and usually the cheapest to buy. Finding a barrel can be the hardest part of making a rain barrel, so I will list a few ideas, and successes that I have had: 1.
Craigslist: This is often the easiest way to find a barrel.It is a staple of most marine and reef tanks, but can be used on freshwater tanks as well. Sumps will increase the aesthetics of your tank and allow for maintenance to occur without disturbing the tank occupants. Most sumps will sit under your tank, so before you get started, make sure you have reasonable space and access.
This type of filter is simple and straightforward. Simply hang the filter on the back of your tank, prime it by adding water to the reservoir and plug it in.
What's recommended is using sturdy sponges as compared to the flimsy floss. These are critical to the building of your biofilter and should never be replaced. These filters are external, like a sump, but are protected from overflows and accidental drainings by being pressurized.
Similar to a sump, you will setup the intake and return tubes from your main tank to the filter that usually sits under your tank. Inside the canister is a variety of mechanical link and biological link filters.
As with the hang-on filters, it is critical to your biological filtration that you never replace these components.
Types of Overflows, an Illustrated Guide

You can use this or a simple plain aquarium and add your own media. Sumps are filled using gravity with a pump to return water to the tank. You will need appropriate hoses to move the water back and forth from your tank. It is recommended that you employ a skimmer box to cycle water in between your tank and sump.
This will decrease the pull off the outflow to prevent animals from being sucked into the sump. It also acts as a fail-safe to protect your sump from accidentally draining your tank. Ideally, you should set up your outflow and inflow in opposing spots so it creates a gyre in your tank.
Connect tubing between overflow skimmer to sump inflow. If you are making your own sump without a kit, inflow from the tank should come into one side of the tank and return on the opposite side. Ideally, your inflow should cover the top of the tank and the outflow collects water from the bottom after it flows over the biological filter media you have chosen.
Setup your return hoses from the sump pump to return water from the sump to the tank. If you lose power, your sump will have to hold the extra water in the lines and any additional water that is pulled via gravity.
Keep the return hose close to the top of your water line in your main tank. If you lose power or your pump fails, this way it will not drain your tank. This is also why you should place air pumps above your tank. Position the return so it flows through the tank before reaching the outflow.
If your outflow is too close to the return to your sump, you are not filtering the entire volume of your tank. This is not the same type of sump pump that keeps your basement dry! Most kits will have an appropriate size pump to match the flow of gravity from the skimmer basket and tubing size selected.

To smooth edge's you can "rig" up something like this, use a utility knife blade and make sure it's at 90 degrees. At least that is my explanation for the increase in flow. I have also been testing with the length of the outside pipes versus inside and have found that having the outside pipes 1. This length may change for large pipes. I am pretty happy with how it is performing so far but I have burnt through parts with all of my testing but PVC is cheap so the testing has been worth it.
So I went to setup everything outside this weekend to perform an extended week long test and ran into some issues. Because of these I had to make some design changes. Issue was that my check valve malfunctioned already. I also adjusted the height of the inside vs outside tubes to make them even once again.

Also the outlet to from overflow must be above the bottom on the inside pipe assembly. I actually had to end up gluing PVC cement everything for my extended testing. Best way to test for this is to shut the pump off and let the water drain. You will have some slow dripping from the drain pipe for maybe 30 to 60 seconds but after that you should have nothing. If you have a constant drip it means you are leaking air and your siphon will eventually fail causing it not to drain once you start the pump back up.
I am still thinking about picking up an aqua lifter pump for this build in order to always be removing air. At the very least I would turn it on if I leave my house for an extended period of time.
I am going to try to pick one up on this Thursday add it to the test to see what it does. I will report back with the results. In my first test setup you can see my outlet gently goes into my sump with no bends this was silent but I changed that for the extended testing to mimic how it would be actually installed into the DT.
I added a 90 elbow and ran a pipe straight down and the gurgling started and there was no way I was going to run something that sounded like that. After numerous changes I discovered adding any bends over 45 degrees would cause a gurgling sound from the vent tube.
My guess is that air is getting trapped in the bend. I was also thinking it could have been the 90 elbows the elbows have a very sharp bend internally I was using but after reading more online it seems that this is a common issue with these overflows. This allowed me to add the 90 elbows that I would need in order to get it into my sump and it has been silent for the past 18 hrs that it has been running.Does your water bill scare you?
